Frequently Asked Questions

Orillia Curling Club FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

Will curling take place this year?

Yes! We have been given assurances from the City that our season will start on time. They have secured parts and equipment to put ice in and barring any unforeseen circumstances, will be ready to go with practice ice October 8th and 9th with Ladies League play October 11th.

What will curling look like this year?

The Orillia Curling Club, as it stands currently, will resume operations as usual. Meaning, masks are not required but should be considered for those who are at high risk or immune compromised.

Do I need to wear a mask?

The answer is no. However, in order to provide a safe environment, the club as well as CurlOn would recommend wearing a mask but no it is not required nor mandated while curling.

Locker Rentals

The City is allowing locker rentals this year.  During registration, members can select whether they wish to rent a locker and if applicable, enter the specific locker number. Cost is $27 plus HST

Proof of Vaccination

Currently this is no longer required.

What will curling look like come October?
Currently there are no Covid restrictions and curling will resume on time and as usual. October 8th and 9th will be practice ice for members with Ladies League play starting October 11th!

Is curling expensive?
No, it isn’t! If you have never curled before, our club has brooms and sliders available for use. If you want to join for 1 month, 3 months, or an entire year, you can! If you are a New Member that has not curled with our club in the last 5 years, you can get an additional 25% off your membership!

I have never curled before and don’t want to commit to a big membership.
We were all in your position at one time. That’s why we created several options to help you. First, there is a Pay to Play option. You can pay $20 and come out most Friday nights with other “newbies” and give it a try! We will have trainers on hand to show you the basics and take part in a game. If you want, you can sign up for a 1-month membership, or 3 months- entirely up to you!

Is there training for new members?

Yes there is.    During our opening weekend (October 8th and 9th, 2022) we provide 2.5 hour training sessions for new curlers and 2nd year curlers.    Training sessions are scheduled for 9:30 to 12:00, and 12:30 to 3:00 each day.  Second year curlers can also come out for refreshers with the curling instructors.      Once you register to be a member, go to the Events tab on the website and then Events Registration and pick the date and time you will attend the training.

If I register for a membership, but find out at the opening weekend training session that I can't continue, can I get a refund.

Absolutley!  If you notify us before the start of league play (which is the week immediately following the opening weekend) that you can't continue, you will receive a full refund.

I am not a competitive person and feel intimidated when I’m not very good.
Don’t. In fact, most of our leagues are fun leagues. Obviously, we do have competitive leagues but you can join fun leagues in a "lead" position and as you get more comfortable and improve, you can move up!

I want to curl but also really just want to meet people.
Perfect! You will see how friendly and welcoming our members are. Often curling gets in the way of fun on-ice conversations! After the game, the comradery continues in the lounge with other team members! In some leagues such as “Tag” draws, you play with different people each week. In others, it’s the same team for half the season.

Filling out forms and cheques, mailing them in or having to drop them off is a lot of work. Is there an easier way to register?
Absolutely! In fact, registering online is a much better experience and in fact, is easier for us! You can email the club for a membership login and do the entire process online. When you finish you can pay by Visa or MasterCard if you want!

What if I need to miss a game?
We have taken that problem away. Usually, if a team has a bye that day, you could contact one of those players. Otherwise, you can email the spare list for that league. All this is done right from your member account.

Can I spare in other leagues?
Yes. In your member account, you can indicate your sparing availability. It will give you a chance to experience other leagues and meet new people.

What if I need to stop due to health or life changes?
No one can predict the future - not even you, and life happens. In the event that you need to stop playing, the club will calculate the remainder of the season for which you have paid and determine an equitable refund.
